2014 Kobe Bryant Game Worn and Signed Jersey
What is this jersey?
This is the jersey Kobe Bryant wore when he dropped 22 points against the Celtics in a 113-96 loss during what was a pretty miserable year for the Lakers. While Kobe had an above average game statistically, he had a 29 point +/-, good for the game’s worst.
Cultural relevance
One of the greatest players of all time, Bryant helped the Lakers win five NBA championships, and was an 18-time All-Star, a 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, a 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team, the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), and a two-time NBA Finals MVP. Bryant also led the NBA in scoring twice, and ranks fourth on the league's all-time regular season scoring and all-time postseason scoring lists.
While the game itself was a stinker, 2014-2015 was Kobe’s penultimate year with the Lakers, which gives this jersey a bit of significance. He spent his entire 20 year career with the same team.
Kobe Bryant, his daughter, the pilot, and six other passengers passed away in January 2020 when his helicopter crashed due to heavy fog.
Valuation
We have a couple loose comps for this one:
An unsigned game-worn jersey from the same year sold for $45k in April 2020.
A signed jersey from an unknown 2004 - 2005 game sold for $28,800 in February 2020.
Kobe’s 1996 Topps Chrome rookie card has appreciated over 1100% since February 2020.
Outlook + future catalysts
Kobe’s cards have appreciated significantly, and Blue Chip basketball stars look strong going forward while newer talent shows some weakness.
Verdict
This is solid buy given the comps and Kobe’s recent appreciation. Something to whet your appetite for the signed floor coming soon.
The shoes MJ wore when he shattered the backboard
What are these shoes?
On August 25th, 1985, Michael Jordan dunked home a ball that destroyed the backboard during an international all-star game.
Widely considered one of the five most iconic Jordan moments, it was a feat of brute physical strength.
These are the shoes he wore; in fact, there are still shards of glass embedded in the sole.
Cultural relevance
You know who Michael Jordan is. He’s a big f-ing deal. Most people who know who MJ is know he destroyed a backboard. These are the shoes he wore doing it.
Valuation
Otis purchased the shoes from a private collector who acquired the sneakers at a Christie’s auction in August 2020 for $615,000. Christie’s estimated the value of the sneaker to be between $650,000 and $850,000 at the time.
A few other signed Jordan bits that may be relevant:
Game worn jersey from 1996-1997: $288k
Game Worn Air Jordans from 1985: $117k
1997 Upper Deck Game Jersey Autograph card: $1.44m
Outlook + future catalysts
MJ’s 1986-1987 Fleer rookie has taken a breather lately, pulling back from the record-setting Goldin auction a couple weeks ago. While the market for that card is starting to feel a bit saturated, this is a true one of a kind item.
Verdict
This is a cool asset to own. Is it worth $700k? Up to you.
